Advancing from programmer to (technical) manager is considered to be the default career path. And when one thinks about then it absolutely makes sense. The impact you can have is just far larger and there is no better feeling than guiding others and sharing your knowledge. In my perspective this is the goal that every developer should aim for, fact. Of course it is okay, to be just a programmer and it can also be extremely satisfying, but even if you are crazy good, which does not apply to most of us, you can get so much more done, by having the knowledge and guiding others.
